FAQ
Q. What are omega-3 fatty acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that are considered essential because they cannot be made by the body and must be consumed through food or supplements.
Three types of omega-3s include ALA, DHA, and EPA. ALA is found in plant foods such as flaxseed and nuts. DHA and EPA are found in certain types of fish, such as pollock, salmon, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and mackerel. All omega-3s are considered healthy fats, but EPA and DHA from fish oil have been the most studied and have shown beneficial effects for a variety of conditions.
Q. What types of fish are used in TherOmega, and from where are they sourced?
TherOmega is 100% sourced from wild Alaskan fish oils. The fish oil used in TherOmega is from sustainable, wild-caught Alaska Pollock from the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska.
Q. Is the fish oil in TherOmega from a sustainable source?
Yes. The fish oil in TherOmega is certified Sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), considered by many the gold standard for sustainability certification.
Q. Should I take TherOmega if I eat fish?
That depends on your health status and the amount of fish you eat. Healthy individuals who eat fatty fish more than twice a week may not need a daily supplement. For those who don't eat fish often, 500-1000 mg supplemental EPA/DHA per day will provide a similar heart-healthy dose.
For individuals with certain health conditions, the dose of fish oil that has been associated with benefit is higher than can generally be obtained by eating fatty fish. It is best to check with your healthcare provider to determine the amount of EPA/DHA that is best for you.
The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that all adults eat a variety of fish, particularly fatty fish, at least twice a week or take a supplement providing approximately 500 mg EPA/DHA per day. For those with heart disease, the AHA recommends a dose of approximately 1,000 mg per day of EPA and DHA. For adults trying to lower triglyceride levels, the AHA recommends 2,000-4,000 mg per day of EPA and DHA from fish oil, taken under a physician's care.
Q. How much TherOmega should I take per day?
The recommended daily dose of TherOmega is one to five softgels per day, which provides a total of 600 to 3000 mg EPA and DHA. Some physicians may recommend a higher dose for certain individuals. Check with your doctor or healthcare provider for individual recommendations.
Q. Is TherOmega free from mercury and other contaminants?
Yes. TherOmega is free from mercury and other contaminants found in fish. TherOmega is made using molecularly distilled fish oil, and it is independently tested and certified for content accuracy and purity by NSF® International. Further, every lot of TherOmega is also tested for freedom from contaminants such as mercury, lead, and PCBs by the IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) Program. IFOS awarded TherOmega with its highest rating of 5 stars, which shows its exceptional quality and purity. View IFOS test results here
Q. Is there anyone who should NOT take TherOmega?
If you are allergic to fish, consult with your doctor whether fish oil is safe for you.
High doses of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA (over 3,000 mg per day)can prolong bleeding time. Therefore, hemophiliacs and individuals taking blood thinners should exercise caution in the use of high-dose fish oil and should have their coagulation status monitored regularly.
TherOmega should be stopped approximately 7-10 days before and after surgery.
Q. Will TherOmega interact with any prescription medications or dietary supplements?
Yes. Check with your doctor due if you take the following medications:
Antiplatelet drugs (aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dipyridamole (Persantine), ticlopidine (Ticlid), and others)
Anticoagulant drugs (ardeparin (Normiflo), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, and warfarin (Coumadin))
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs
Dietary supplements:
Use caution with herbs with potential blood-thinning effects such as garlic and ginkgo biloba.
